ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
ENGLISH I (Freshmen) PREREQUISITE: NONE
Fundamentals of grammar, syntax, rhetoric, and punctuation, as well as basic literary forms are covered. The reading objectives of this course include a desire for students to extend their basic vocabulary, analyze the development of story elements and literary devices, and demonstrate a critical understanding of a variety of texts including nonfiction, short stories, drama, poetry, the novel, and film. Students use literary interpretation, analysis, comparisons, and evaluation to read and respond to representative works of historical or cultural significance appropriate for Grade 9 in classic and contemporary literature balanced with nonfiction. Writing objectives of this course include a desire for students to develop organized, coherent paragraphs, followed by various types of multi-paragraph compositions. Students will learn to apply standard rules of sentence formation, word usage, and mechanics throughout their writing. Students will also be expected to organize and deliver formal oral presentations, as well as participate in group discussions.
ENGLISH I HONORS (Freshmen) PREREQUISITE: Instructor Approval

This is an accelerated course for those students identified as being proficient in writing, reading comprehension, the basics of grammar, mechanics and usage. Fundamentals instructed in English I will take place at an accelerated rate and students will be expected to complete rigorous course work. Added emphasis is placed on independent reading as well as literary analysis. Teacher recommendation required.

ENGLISH II (Sophomores) PREREQUISITE: ENGLISH I

A study of world literature that focuses on reading, writing, proofreading, speaking, listening, and research is emphasized. Students use literary interpretation, analysis, comparisons, and evaluation to read and respond to representative works of historical or cultural significance appropriate for Grade 10 in classic and contemporary world literature balanced with nonfiction. Writing objectives of this course include a desire for students to develop organized paragraphs, and then develop multi-paragraph essays including narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and research writing. Students will learn to apply standard rules of sentence formation, word usage, and mechanics throughout their writing. Students will also be expected to organize and deliver formal oral presentations, as well as participate in group discussions.

ENGLISH II Honors (Sophomores) PREREQUISITE: ENGLISH I Honors or Instructor Approval

This is an accelerated course for those students identified as being proficient in basic vocabulary and the ability to analyze the development of story elements and literary devices. Students should also be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of a variety of texts including nonfiction, short stories, drama, poetry, the novel, and film. Fundamentals instructed in English II will take place at an accelerated rate and students will be expected to complete rigorous course work. Added emphasis is placed on independent reading as well as literary analysis and compositional work. Teacher recommendation required.

 

ENGLISH III (Juniors) PREREQUISITE: ENGLISH II

A study of American literature from the colonial period to the present is covered. Students will extend their basic vocabulary, analyze literary elements in American texts, draw oral and written conclusions based on literature, analyze the impact of history on culture and literature, and explore the significance of techniques, characteristics, and themes in major periods of American literature. Autobiographical writing and readings from nineteenth- century literature comprise the first semester's work. Advanced expository writing and readings from twentieth-century fiction comprise the second semester. Students will also be expected to write fictional narratives, short stories, responses to literature, reflective compositions, historical investigation reports, resumes, and technical documents incorporating visual information in the form of pictures, graphs, and tables.  Students will write and deliver grade-appropriate multimedia presentations and access, analyze, and evaluate online information.

ENGLISH III Honors (Juniors) PREREQUISITE: ENGLISH II Honors or Instructor Approval
This is an accelerated course for those students identified as being proficient in literary interpretation, analysis, and the ability to evaluate and respond to representative works of historical or cultural significance. Fundamentals instructed in English III will take place at an accelerated rate and students will be expected to complete rigorous course work. Added emphasis is placed on independent reading as well as literary analysis and compositional work. Teacher recommendation required
ENGLISH IV (Seniors) PREREQUISITE: ENGLISH III

This class is a study of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present. Students will extend their basic vocabulary, analyze literary elements in British texts, draw oral and written conclusions based on literature, analyze the impact of history on culture and literature, and explore the significance of techniques, characteristics, and themes in major periods of British literature. A central feature of this course is a study of Greek and Elizabethan tragic drama and a research paper based on these studies. Students will also be expected to write fictional narratives, short stories, responses to literature, reflective compositions, historical investigation reports, resumes, and technical documents incorporating visual information in the form of pictures, graphs, and tables.  Students will write and deliver grade-appropriate multimedia presentations and access, analyze, and evaluate online information.

ENGLISH IV Honors (Seniors) PREREQUISITE: ENGLISH III Honors or Instructor Approval

This is an accelerated course for those students identified as being proficient in all areas of instruction previously covered in English I thru English III. Fundamentals instructed in English IV will take place at an accelerated rate and students will be expected to complete rigorous course work. Added emphasis is placed on creating compositional work that is aligned with the expectations of a post-secondary institution. Teacher recommendation required.
